“The reinforcement of this building took place while the Ministry of Education staff continued to occupy part of the premises. The work involved excavation, pouring overlay plates, and installing casings on structural columns, beams, and perimeter masonry walls.

On several occasions, the client requested our presence in meetings with the building’s occupants, who were concerned about the potential risks of the process. During these discussions, we addressed their worries, as some feared that the reinforcement might have “weakened” the building. We reassured them that, on the contrary, the building was actually becoming stronger with each passing day. One occupant shared her fear of the drilling noise, concerned that a drill bit might break through the floor and cause injury.

We explained that the drilling was taking place two floors below, with adequate protective measures in place between the work areas and the occupied floors. Moreover, when the Cinchona earthquake occurred, it understandably caused panic among both the staff and construction workers present. However, the reinforced levels of the building showed no signs of damage.”
